  • Demand the Return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia

Demand the Return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia

We are facing a constitutional crisis. On April 10th, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ordered the Trump administration to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia—a Salvadoran man who was in the U.S. legally but was secretly and illegally deported to El Salvador over what officials now admit was an “administrative error.”

Instead of complying with the court’s ruling, the administration has defied it. White House officials are claiming it’s “up to El Salvador” whether he returns—ignoring the Supreme Court’s direct order.

Kilmar is now imprisoned in a notorious Salvadoran prison. The refusal to follow this ruling signals something terrifying: if the federal government can forcibly remove someone from the U.S., even after a Supreme Court ruling, no one is safe. This is about more than one case—it’s about the collapse of due process and constitutional checks on power. If left unchecked, it means the federal government could disappear anyone—citizen or not—without recourse.

We need members of Congress to speak out, loudly and clearly. This is not a partisan issue—it’s a matter of law, human rights, and democracy.

Use this form to email your members of Congress

Follow up with a phone call:

    • Find your representative
    • Contact Senator Durbin at 312-353-4952 or at other numbers listed here
    • Contact Senator Duckworth at 312-886-3506 or at other numbers listed here

Sample Script (always best to use your own words): Hi, my name is [NAME], and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I’m calling to urge [REP/SEN NAME] to speak out and demand the Trump administration follow the Supreme Court’s order to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia. No one should be deported without due process—this is a constitutional crisis. This is not a partisan issue—it’s a matter of law, human rights, and democracy. Please act now.

30,000 Of Us Flooded Daley Plaza for Hands Off Rally

    Jim Vondruska, Block Club Chicago

The Hands Off message was both broad and simple: we told the Trump administration to keep their hands off the people, programs, places, planet, rights, and freedoms that we hold dear, and we call on our elected leaders and everyday people to act.

Across the nation, over 1400 Hands Off events took place on April 5th. (Learn more about Chicago’s event via Sun-Times, Block Club Chicago, CBS Chicago, ABC Chicago.)

Use Your Voice and Your Vote

Over 100 people packed the town hall with US Congressman Mike Quigley Thursday night. Just as he is using his voice and his vote to oppose the Trump regime, he urged the audience to do the same.

Our actions are having an effect both on encouraging our elected officials to resist; and, on bolstering the efforts of people who are already resisting. Keep writing and calling your representatives.

  • Why protest?

    Why protest?

A BBC report claims that “it takes around 3.5% of the population actively participating in peaceful protests to make serious political change.” These findings are based on a book by Erica Chenoweth, a political scientist at Harvard University.

ILS is not affiliated with nor does it endorse these actions but provides them as information you might find interesting.

  • Know Your Protest Rights

    Know Your Protest Rights

    From the ACLU:

    1. You don’t need a permit to protest in response to breaking news and you don’t need a permit to march in the streets or along sidewalks, as long as you’re not obstructing traffic or access to buildings.

    2. When you are lawfully present in any public space, you have the right to photograph anything in plain view, including federal buildings and the police.

    3. If you believe your rights have been violated, when you can, write down everything you remember, get contact information for witnesses, and take photographs of any injuries.

    4. If you get stopped by the police, ask if you’re free to go. If they say yes, calmly walk away.

    5. If you get arrested, you have the right to ask why. Otherwise, say you wish to remain silent and ask for a lawyer immediately. Don’t sign, say or agree to anything without a lawyer present.

    6. If you get stopped by a member of the military or any law enforcement officer at a protest, you have the right to remain silent or to tell them that you’ll only answer questions in the presence of an attorney -no matter your citizenship or immigration status.

The government will shut down on March 14 unless Congress passes a new spending bill. Republicans are pushing a MAGA continuing resolution (CR) that proposes extreme cuts, threatening Social Security, housing, food security, and veterans’ benefits. This is not a “clean” CR; it’s a slush fund that increases Trump and Elon Musk’s power over federal spending.

Democratic Senators must not support this CR. Instead, they should leverage their position to demand a bill that rejects extreme cuts and protects abortion rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and immigrant communities.

  • Medicaid and Medicare Are on the Chopping Block

Medicaid and Medicare Are on the Chopping Block

At the end of February the GOP controlled House of Representatives voted a Budget Resolution that instructed the Energy and Commerce Committee to cut $880 Billion. The only way to do this is by severely cutting Medicaid which provides healthcare to more than 72 million Americans.

In Illinois this includes almost half of our children, two thirds of our seniors in nursing homes, and 40% of all pregnancies. MAGA wants to cut Medicaid and other essential services (like SNAP) so that they can continue tax giveaways to the ultra wealthy.

If you want to fight to save it – join the Indivisible phone bank with our HealthCare Working Group. We helped defeat the overturning of ACA by phone banking constituents to call their elected representatives.

We will review the facts on Medicaid and train you to phone bank if you haven’t done it before.
